FROM THE ZINC... Throughout the early and mid-century,
traditional French cafés, bistros, & neighborhood taverns
had a zinc topped bar where the patrons could enjoy conversation,
camaraderie and refreshment or a meal. In the forties and fifties
the drinking crowds would say "let's hit the zinc" on their
way out to the local zinc bar for the evening. Less common today
in France, and even more rare in the states, is the deep lustrous
tone and solid cool touch of bars like the Café Continental
Zinc. Ours comes from the Rhineland just across the French-German
Border. It was brought in pieces to the U.S. from a Canadian
importer and then retro-fitted for Café Continental by
local German master metal fabricator Louis Albrecht. We hope
you'll enjoy the same communal pleasures found at the zinc in
the small cafés, bistros & taverns of France and Germany
.
